A THING OF BEAUTY (JOHN KEATS)
SUMMARY OF THE POEM
(Analysis by Baljit Singh)
A beautiful thing is a source of eternal (सदा रहने वाला)joy. Its loveliness increases with the passage of time and its impact(प्रभाव) never fades away. It is as soothing (शान्ति देने वाला) as a cool shade. It never passes into nothingness. It gives us good health, sound sleep and peace of mind. It provides the beholder( देखने वाला) peace and contentment ( सन्तोष)
Man and nature are inseparable (अविभाज्य) It is the beauty of nature that binds us to the earth. Every morning we collect fresh flowers and prepare garlands that refresh our mind and we forget our worries for some time.
Every day we get bitter taste of sorrow, suffering and grief. It is the beautiful things that remove the pall of sadness from our lives and make us happy and hopeful.
All beautiful things of nature are a boon for human beings. The sun, the moon, trees, simple sheep, daffodils, clear streams, musk rose and forest brakes ( झाड़ियाँ) provide us peace and contentment.
In addition to these lovely things of nature, there are lovely plays and poems that lift our spirits. The glorious achievements of mighty heroes and magnificent rewards by God on the day of judgment for those mighty men and lovely tales of olden days are the everlasting source of joy. The poet feels that beautiful things are like an endless fountain that pours an immortal drink ( . अमृत)from heaven into our hearts. In brief, beauty is a gift of God that gives us joy for ever.-----------------------Baljit Singh
