ii) His second phase of relationship was not as innocent as his first one. The writer was called by his parents in the city. Now he went to school in a motor bus. So his grandmother did not go with him. The writer used to go in an English school. So she could not help him in his studies.
iii) His third phase of relationship started when the writer joined the University and got a separate room. The common link of friendship between them was snapped. LESSON 2.

''We are not Afraid to Die -If We can All Die Together''

TEXTUAL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q1. What steps were taken by the captain to protect the ship from rough weather?
Ans:-The captain started his journey to go round the world with his family. He started from Plymouth, England in his boat named Wavewalker which  had been professionally built to face the roughest weathers of the sea. The first leg of his voyage passed pleasantly as they sailed down the west coast of Africa to Cape Town. But before heading east, he hired two crewmen for help.
In order to face the enormous and dangerous waves of the Southern Indian Ocean, he dropped the storm jibs that slowed down the speed of the roaring waves. He also tied a heavy mooring rope across the front part of the boat and put on oilskins and life jackets. In this way he took precautions to protect his ship from storm.

Q2. What steps did he take to check flooding of water in the ship?
Ans. Suddenly, the boat struck with a rock breaking its base. The water started gushing in alarmingly. Both of the crewmen stated pumping water out of the boat madly. The captain put a canvas over the holes in the deck. The situation became very dangerous when the pumps started to block up with garbage. The electric pump also stopped working. Luckily there were spare pumps which worked. Thus the ship was saved from sinking.

Q3.- Describe the mental condition of the voyagers on 4 and 5 January.
Ans. The voyagers were in a horrible state. They had been continuously pumping water for 36 hours and were dead tired and hungry as they had eaten nothing for the last two days Still, they could not pump out the water as it was continuously gushing in.They could not set sail on the main mast as it could break the hull apart. So they hoisted the storm jib and headed for the nearby islands. But their respite was short lived .The weather deteriorated and by the dawn of January 5, their situation was again desperate. The captain's son Jon said," We are not afraid to die if we can all be together". These words aptly reflect their state of mind.

Q4. How does the story suggest that optimism helps to endure "the direst stress?" OR
What message does the story convey?
Ans. The story conveys a deep moral message that optimism helps to endure direst stress. One should face the difficulties of life with cheerful heart and determination. Optimism acts as a catalytic for the tired minds. An optimistic person never loses courage and hope. He sees a silver lining in  dark clouds. The captain and his children show exemplary courage and optimism when their ship is near to sink in the deep sea and their end is very near. The ship was badly damaged but they did not lose hope and ultimately struggled to reach the' Isle Amsterdam'

Q5. What lessons do we learn from such hazardous experiences when we are face to face with death?
Ans-Our bitter experiences become our real asset if we take them optimistically. During difficulties our real character comes to light. We should not lose hope and face the challenges of life with cheerful heart and determination. Only weak and crippled minds bow before hardships while the bold and brave minds swallow the poison of obstacles happily and succeed in their mission.

Q6. Why do you think people take such adventurous expeditions in spite of the risks involved?
Ans. Adventurous loving people always play a risky game in hope to do something new and impossible. They climb on  the Everest, swim across the seas or reach the poles. They know that in such expeditions, they may lose their life. But they are afire with high hopes and determination and believe in their own might. They are full of self-confidence and optimism.

SUMMARY OF THE POEM

The poem sums up the theme of permanence of  nature and transience of human life.  All the natural things seem to change less as compare to human beings. The life of living beings is very short whereas the things of nature or the things made by man have a permanent value. They keep their lustre for a long time. The poetess finds a photograph in which her mother was paddling on a sea-coast with her two cousins. All three were in a merry mood. This photograph was taken by her mother's uncle. All the three girls were smiling through their hair It was taken when the poetess was not born. This photograph makes the poetess sad and nostalgic. It reminds her of her mother who was no more in this world. Her death was a great loss for her. The silence of the photograph silences her. She says with sad and heavy heart  that the sea that washed their feet seems to change less.

The Laburnum Top by Ted Hughes

Summary of the poem

It is a short and beautiful poem written by Ted Hughes. It is written in blank verse. There are three stages in this poem. These are- 1. before the gold finch enters the tree. 2. The time when she is inside the  tree. 3. After she has launched away in the infinite. The laburnum top is quiet and still before the goldfinch comes. Its leaves are yellowing. But as the goldfinch enters its thickness ,the whole tree comes to life. It starts trembling with the chirruping of birds and rustling of leaves. The gold finch enters the tree as smooth and alert as a lizard. She feeds her young ones and comes out and sits on the end of a branch and then launches away in the sky and the tree becomes silent again. The poet says that the goldfinch is the engine of her family. She stokes it and a machine starts. Her movements are compared to a lizard.   Poet has used imagery of engine to bring out his point.

Q1. What has the movement of the goldfinch compared to? What is the basis of this comparison?
Ans. The movement of the goldfinch has been compared to a lizard. Just as a lizard move carefully and then attacks it's victim suddenly, similarly a goldfinch enters the tree abruptly so that she may not be observed by some predator bird.

2 Why has the image of engine been evoked by the poet? What purpose does it serve?

Ans. Just as an engine is the source of energy for a machine, similarly, the goldfinch is the engine for her family . She feeds her youngones and protects them.

Summary :-

The Rattrap brings out the idea that no one is evil by birth or by nature. Every one has goodness in his heart. An evil person can change to become a good one if he is treated in a nice way.  The Rattrap is a story of a peddler who goes round selling rattrap which he makes himself by using wires. His business in not much profitable. So he is given to petty thievery. He thinks evil about the world. One night he takes shelter in a wayside cottage . Its owner is an oldman who lives alone. He welcomes the peddler in his cottage. He provides him food. He plays and talks intimately with the peddler. But the peddler robs him of his thirty Kronor. He breaks his faith. After stealing the money the peddler takes his way through the forest so that he may not be caught. But he is lost in the mazy forest. He can not find a way to come out of the forest. He realises that he has been trapped in the rattrap of the world. Just then he hears the sounds of hammer strokes coming from an iron mill. He enters the forge to warm himself. After a short time the owner of the mill comes there. He mistakes the peddler for his old acquaintance  and asks him to accompany him to his home. But the peddler wants to stay there. The ironmaster returns to his home. He tells his daughter about his old companion. His  daughter goes to the mill. She requests the peddler in a very humble way. The peddler gets ready to accompany her. On reaching the ironmaster's home, the peddler is bathed. His beard is trimmed. He is given the ironmaster's clothes to wear. In broad daylight ,the ironmaster realises his mistake. The peddler is not his old acquaintance. The ironmaster scolds him. He calls him a cheater. He asks him to leave his home at once. But his daughter intervenes. She requests her father to let him stay with them on the Christmas Eve. She says that the peddler never posed to be their acquaintance. It was all due to mistake. Thus Edla helps the peddler. She treats him nicely. Next morning the father and his daughter go to the church for morning prayer. There they hear that a peddler robbed the crofter of his thirty Kronor. When the girl hears this she is embarrassed very much. She repents that she let a rouge stay in her home. But when she comes to her home, she is amazed. The stranger had left. He did not take any thing with him. On the other hand he had left a packet for Edla. In the packet, there was a rattrap and a letter and three notes of ten Kronor each. In the letter he had written," Since you have been so nice to me all day long, I also want to be nice to you in return. You can give back the money to the old man on roadside. The Rattrap is a Christmas present from a rat who would have been caught in this world's rattrap if he had not been treated as a captain." Thus the nice behaviour of the girl transformed a ragamuffin.

Q1.From where did the peddler get the idea of the world being a rattrap?

Answer

One day the peddler was thinking of his rattraps. Suddenly he was struck by an idea that the whole world with its lands and seas, its cities and villages was nothing but a big rattrap. It offered riches and joys, shelter and food as baits in the same manner as the rattrap offered cheese and pork. As soon as someone touches the bait, he finds himself in the trap.

Q2.Why was he amused by the idea?
Ans. The peddler was struck with the idea that the whole world with its riches and joys; with its lands and seas; its cities and villages was nothing but a big rattrap. This idea gave him much satisfaction. The world had never been kind to him so it gave him unwanted joy to think I'll of it.

Q3. Did the peddler expect the kind of hospitality that he received from the crofter?
Ans. No, he didn't expect the kind of hospitality that he received from the crofter. He was often scolded and chased away by the people.

Q4.Why was the crofter so talkative and friendly with the peddler?
Ans. The crofter was an old person who lived alone in his cottage. He was a very kind person. He welcomed the peddler thinking that he would have someone to talk in his loneliness. He played mjolis with him. He offered him food. He talked to him intimately.

Q5.Why did the crofter show pouch of thirty Kronor to the peddler?
Ans. The crofter told the peddler that he earned thirty Kronor by selling milk last month. The peddler seemed to be incredulous. So he showed him thirty Kronor to make him believe his story.

Q6. Did the peddler respect the confidence reposed in him?
Ans. The peddler was not a trustworthy fellow. The crofter offered him food and shelter. He talked to him very intimately. But the peddler shattered the faith reposed in him. He robbed the crofter of his thirty Kronor.

Q7.What made the peddler think that he had indeed fallen into a rattrap?

Ans. After stealing thirty Kronor from the crofter, the peddler took his way through the forest so that he might not be caught. But the forest was mazy. He could not find a way out of it. Then he realised that he had fallen into a rattrap.

Q8. Why did the ironmaster speak kindly to the peddler and invite him home?
Ans. The ironmaster mistook the peddler for his old acquaintance. He was moved to see his miserable condition. So he spoke to him kindly and invited him to his house.

Q9. Why did the peddler decline his invitation?
Ans. The peddler had thirty Kronor with him which he had stolen from the crofter. He feared that he would be caught by police. So he declined the ironmaster's invitation.

Q10.What made the peddler accept Edla Williamson's invitation?
Ans. Edla Williamson was a kind and gentle lady. She spoke in a very friendly way . The peddler could not decline her request.
Q11. When did the ironmaster realise his mistake? What did he do then?

Ans. The ironmaster realised his mistake when he saw the peddler next day in broad daylight. The peddler had been washed, his hair was cut, his beard was trimmed. He was not an acquaintance of the ironmaster. The ironmaster scolded him and called him a cheater. He asked him to leave his home at once.

Q12. What did the peddler say in his defence when it was clear that he was not the person the ironmaster had thought he was?
Ans. The peddler defended himself. He said that it was not his fault. He never posed to be a former captain and his acquaintance. He wanted to stay in the forge. But the ironmaster and his daughter Edla Williamson forced him to move in his home.

Q13. Why did Edla still entertain the peddler even after she knew the truth about him?
Ans. Edla Williamson was a generous lady. She came to know that the peddler was not an old acquaintance of her father. It was all a mistake due to darkness of night. She knew that the peddler never posed to be what he was not. She wanted to celebrate her Christmas with him. By serving him food on Christmas , she wanted to prove her charity and nobleness of heart.

Q14. What doubts did Edla have about the peddler?
Ans. The peddler looked very absurd in his rags. His looks and behaviour seemed doubtful. It appeared to Edla that he had stolen something or had escaped from jail.

Q15. Why did the peddler sign himself as Captain von Stahle?
Ans. The peddler was entertained as a captain in the ironmaster's home. Edla addressed him as Captain all the time. It was in this role that his conscience was awakened and he escaped falling in world's rattrap. That's why he signed himself as Captain Von Stahle.

Long Answer Type Questions

Q1.Write a brief character-sketch of the peddler. OR
Who was the peddler? Why did he think that the whole world is a rattrap?
OR
The peddler comes out as a person with a great sense of humor. How does this serve in lightening the seriousness of the theme of the story and also endear him to us?

Ans. Consult the summary of the story.

How does the metaphor of rattrap serve to highlight the human predicament?

Ans. The metaphor of rattrap rightly serves to highlight the human predicament. The world is a big rattrap with all its riches and joys; food and shelter; heat and clothing. These worldly things serve as baits and dupe a noble man. These enticements serve same as pork and cheese serve to a rat. Just as the rat is entrapped as soon as he touches the pork or cheese similarly an honest and nobleman is entrapped in rattrap of the world. The peddler realises this when he finds no way out of the mazy forest. But Edla's nice behaviour serves as a medicine for his evilness and he escapes from falling in the rattrap of the world. His hidden nobleness comes to the brim.
